Academic rank and positions

Academic career at Universidade de São Paulo is comprised of three categories: Professor Doutor (similar to Assistant Professor), Professor Associado (similar to Associate Professor) and Professor Titular (similar to Full Professor), per Título VII of USP's Statute.

Admission for the positions of Professor Doutor and Professor Titular at USP occurs through public tender. New openings must be approved by the Institute's Academic Board, and the Call for the position is published at Diário Oficial do Estado (São Paulo State Official Gazette). Applications must be submitted through USP's GR system.

Professor Doutor

Professor Doutor is the entry-level faculty position at USP (similar to Assistant Professor). All applicants for this position must hold a Ph.D. degree awarded by USP, recognized by it, or of validity in Brazil. The selective processes at IAG follow IAG's Regulations - Título V - Seção II.

Professor Associado

Livre Docente is a title awarded by Brazilian HEIs, through an examination by a panel of experts. USP's Livre Docência exams allow applications by its faculty members and by external scientists. USP faculty members who are approved in this examination are promoted to the rank of Professor Associado (similar to Associate Professor).

At IAG, a Call for Livre Docência is aproved by the Academic Board every semester, and published at Diário Oficial do Estado (São Paulo State Official Gazette). Applications must be submitted through USP's GR system. The process follows IAG's Regulations - Título V - Seção IV.

Professor Titular

Professor Titular is the highest rank for a USP professor (similar to Full Professor). All applicants must hold the title of Livre Docente granted or recognized by USP. For applicants who are not already members of faculty at USP, there is the option to request recognition for their valuble expertise by IAG's Academic Board.

Applications must be submitted through USP's GR system. The selective processes at IAG follow IAG's Regulations - Título V - Seção III.

Careers at USP

Faculty members holding the ranks of Professor Doutor and Professor Associado may participate in evaluation processes for progression within their ranks (Professor Doutor 1 to Professor Doutor 2; Professor Associado 1 to Professor Associado 2, and Professor Associado 2 to Professor Associado 3). These processes are organized by the Comissão Central de Avaliação para Progressão de Nível na Carreira Docente (CCAD).
