High-mass star formation across the Galactic plane with large-scale surveys

Manuel Merello

IAG/USP

During the last decade, large-scale surveys of continuum and molecular line emission have significantly improved our understanding of the formation of high-mass stars and their surrounding environment. In this talk I will present an overview of Hi-GAL, a survey of infrared continuum emission in five bands between 70-500 microns performed with the Herschel Space Observatory. The images of Hi-GAL provide an amazing view of the dust emission of the Milky Way, and reveal the large population of compact star-forming sources and filamentary interstellar structures. In combination with molecular line surveys with ground-based telescopes,  it is possible the identification and characterization of different evolutionary stages of high-mass star forming regions. In addition, I will show results of our search for luminous hot molecular cores, along with discussing potential follow-up astrochemical studies using LLAMA and ALMA telescopes.
