ALHAMBRA B-band (z < 1) and UV (z > 2.5) luminosity functions by PDF analysis

Abstract: The large-area surveys J-PAS, Euclid, and LSST will provide an overwhelmingly large data set for the next decade. However, their statistical strength is also its main challenge: statistical uncertainties will be no longer a problem, and the systematics in the analysis techniques will dominate the final error budget in our measurements. With usual photometric techniques prone to known biases, new and suited methodologies are mandatory to extract accurate galaxy distributions from these surveys.

In this seminar I present our latests developments in such methodologies, that use the probability distribution functions (PDFs) provided by modern photometric redshift codes. Using ALHAMBRA data, we have developed the luminosity function estimator based on PDFs. I present our results regarding the B-band luminosity function at 0.2 < z < 1 and the UV luminosity function at 2.5 < z < 4.5. Our results are in agreement with previous spectroscopic work, demonstrating the capabilities of our new PDF techniques.

Finally, I will recall the main features and the current status of the J-PAS survey.
