The Giant Magellan Telescope Project:  Current Status

Robert N. Shelton

GMTO Corporation President

The beauty and majesty of astronomy have stimulated generations of young men and women – often starting in elementary or high school - to pursue careers in math, science, or engineering.  As science and technology advance, the desire for a deeper understanding of the cosmos and our place in the universe has fueled the need to build larger and more powerful astronomical telescopes. With modern telescopes we can explore other worlds, probe the physics of black holes and peer back to the dawn of time.  In building the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) we are fulfilling the dreams of one generation of scientists by creating an unprecedented tool for scientific discovery and inspiring and empowering future generations of scientists and engineers to make breakthrough discoveries of their own.  This presentation will offer a comprehensive description of the status of the GMT, acknowledging the foresight of the Founders, emphasizing the science drivers, and providing a detailed description of the recent progress in constructing the observatory.
