In the early 2020s we finally hope to see the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which is poised to bring about the biggest revolution in observational astrophysics since the Hubble Space Telescope almost 30 years ago. I will present a basic technical overview of the JWST project and the capabilities of its scientific instruments. I will also describe how the first years of science operations will proceed, including the Early Release Science, Guaranteed Time Observing and General Observing programs, and explain how to get involved. Finally, I will review how JWST will be used to probe the dawn of galaxy and black hole formation during the re-ionisation epoch.
