A study of the turbulent transport and dissipation of TKE, temperature, specific humidity, and CO2 variance budget equations in the Surface Layer
We have estimated dimensionless transport and dissipation terms of Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) and variances of temperature, moisture, and CO2 using 124 selected high frequency sample segments from the Boundary Layer Afternoon and Sunset Turbulence experiment. The results show that, during the convective Atmospheric Surface Layer (ASL), the dimensionless dissipation terms can be expressed in the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory framework and does not depend on the analyzed variable, when temperature, moisture, or CO2 is considered. This scalar similarity implies that the ASL characteristic scales of specific humidity and CO2 content can be estimated from the respective variance dissipation rate, the characteristic scale of temperature, and the dissipation rate of temperature variance. For the stable ASL, we conclude that other mechanisms in addition to stability parameters are important for the dissipation and transport of TKE, and variances of temperature, moisture, and CO2.
