Habitability: a cosmological perspective

What are the conditions required for the emergence of life (as we know it) in the Universe? How resilient is life? In this seminar I will address the issue of habitability from a cosmological perspective. Firstly, I will present the most recent results of searches for biosignatures in exoplanets. Secondly, I will consider the stellar formation and evolution histories to argue that it is more likely that we find ourselves orbiting a low-mass star in the distant future - provided that these stars are not hostile to life - instead of the Solar System at this moment in time. This raises an interesting question: “why now?”. Finally, I will argue that life as we know it is surprisingly resilient to various cataclysmic astrophysical events.
