Brazil does not have many earthquakes, but there is real seismic risk. In this seminar, I will discuss how computer modeling can help to build our understanding of earthquake activity here in Brazil, even though earthquakes are rare and data are scarce. First, I will introduce different modeling approaches by sharing past research on fault mechanics and dynamic rupture that focus on interplate earthquakes in California, USA, and Sulawesi, Indonesia. Then, I will compare these events to intraplate earthquakes here in Brazil. Finally, I will propose future work to build a database of synthetic ground motions across Brazil.
