Resumo: In this seminar I will present an introduction to the Unified Forecast System (UFS), a new community-based, coupled, comprehensive Earth modeling system. The UFS numerical applications span local to global domains and predictive time scales from sub-hourly analyses to seasonal predictions. It is designed to support the needs of academia and the private sector and to be the source system for NOAA’s operational numerical weather prediction applications.
The “U” in UFS stems from the use of a shared architecture, comprised of common elements such as the Finite Volume Cubed Sphere (FV3) atmospheric dynamical core, the Joint Effort for Data Assimilation (JEDI) system, the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP) library of parameterizations, the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) coupling tools, and the extended Model Evaluation Tools (METplus) forecast verification component.
The UFS is in active development but some experimental and NOAA operational prediction systems are already using elements of the UFS. I will show some examples such as the operational Global Forecast System (GFS) v16 and Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) v12 and the experimental Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS), a convective-allowing ensemble system.
Finally, I will focus on the community aspects of the UFS, such as the open source code, the public releases, documentation, tutorials, seminars, workshops, and funding opportunities.
