Searching for the Highest-Energy Particles with Radio: From Antarctic Ice to Mountain Peaks
a talk by Yaocheng Chen (IAG-USP/Brasil) - In-Person

 

Abstract:

"Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos provide unique probes of the most energetic phenomena in the Universe, but their extremely low flux makes them exceptionally difficult to detect. Radio detection offers a promising approach: coherent radio emission from particle cascades can be observed over large areas, enabling experiments with effective volumes far beyond those of conventional detectors.

In this seminar, I will introduce the basic principles and scientific motivation of radio detection of ultra-high-energy particles, with an emphasis on experiments conducted from Antarctic and high-mountain platforms. I will then present my work on the TAROGE project, including the development of radio-frequency electronics and trigger systems, drone-based calibration, detector simulation, event reconstruction, and the analysis of cosmic-ray candidates. These studies demonstrate how a relatively compact mountain-top radio station can identify and reconstruct extensive air showers while operating in a complex radio environment.

I will conclude by discussing the lessons learned from TAROGE and the prospects and remaining challenges for future large-scale radio detection of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos."

 

Short-Bio:

Yaocheng Chen is a postdoc at IAG-USP working with Prof. Elisabete M. de Gouveia Dal Pino. He received his PhD from National Taiwan University in 2025. His research spans cosmic rays, neutrinos, gamma rays, radio detection, instrumentation, and multimessenger astrophysics.
