SouthPol: Revealing the Polarized Sky
a talk by Antonio Mario Magalhaes (IAG-USP/Brasil) - In-person

Abstract:

"SouthPol will be a survey of the Southern sky in optical polarized light. It will be carried out at the Observatorio do Pico dos Dias (OPD/LNA, Brazil). A newly designed, wide-field polarimeter will be attached to the new 1-meter Robotic Telescope, currently being installed at OPD, and use a 100 Megapixel CCD detector.

SouthPol is an unprecedented undertaking in Astronomy. Initially, it will cover the sky South of the celestial equator. The baseline survey will have a polarimetric accuracy ≲0.1% down to V≈15 (and 1% at V≈19) from 8 2min-exposures. SouthPol will provide Astrophysics with an unparalleled, highly valuable database. Its legacy will have an immediate impact in several areas, such as Cosmology, Extragalactic Astronomy, Interstellar Medium of the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds, Star Formation, Stellar Envelopes, Stellar explosions (GRBs, novae and supernovae) and Solar System, among others.

We will present the current status of the survey, as well as some Science applications in the areas above.

SouthPol is a collaboration between LNA, IAG-USP, INPE, Radboud University, Hiroshima Un. and Tokyo Un. SouthPol is currently supported by FAPESP, FINEP, CNPq and Radboud University, in addition to man-power of the above institutions."
