Proficiency in Languages

 

Current Regulations (valid from 24/01/2014 and also valid for students who opted for the new Program regulations, issued by Resolution CoPGr-6.674):

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY


MSc and PhD students must prove proficiency in English.

Proficiency certificates will be required in the enrollment act.

Proficiency exams, such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, Michigan, taken in the last 5(five) years before enrollment in the Graduate Program, will be accepted for both the Master’s and Doctorate programs. The minimum passing grade for the exams will be disclosed in a specific guide in the website page and in the call for applications in Diário Oficial do Estado de São Paulo.

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (for international students)

 

Besides English proficiency, international students are also required Portuguese proficiency, proved by presenting the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, CELPE-BRAS, intermediate or high level. The certificate must be submitted prior to 16 months since enrollment in the Graduate Program.

The exam will not be required from PhD students who already confirmed Portuguese proficiency during Master’s degree.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

 

Students must demonstrate English proficiency before 50% of the program’s maximum duration has transpired. The exam will occur for both Master’s degree and Doctorate, and will comprise a translation  of a scientific article, the minimum passing grade being 7(seven) for Master’s degree and 8(eight) for Doctorate.

Other exams may be accepted for English language proficiency, such as: TOEFL and IELTS (taken in the last 5 (five) years before the registration deadline for the proficiency exam administered by the Graduate Program), Cambridge and Michigan. Minimum passing grades for each exam will be disclosed in a specific guide on the Astronomy Program webpage on the internet.

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (for international students)

Besides English proficiency, Portuguese proficiency is required for non-portuguese speakers and  must be demonstrated through an exam before 50% of the program’s maximum duration has transpired.

The exam will be a written composition in Portuguese, the minimum passing grade being 7(seven) for Master’s degree and 8(eight) for Doctorate.

The Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners(CELPE-BRAS) intermediate level, may be accepted as proof of Portuguese proficiency.

For PhD students, the exam will not be required from who already confirmed Portuguese proficiency during Master’s degree.
