The selection process for IAG Astronomy graduate courses is divided into two stages to suit new USP Charter of Graduate Studies.

  • The first stage corresponds to the Unified Examination in Physics for graduate studies (EUF – Exame Unificado das Pós-graduações em Física)

  • The second stage, for candidates admitted through the Unified Examination in Physics, is a selection process based on the EUF grade, academic transcript and Curriculum Vitae.

Certificate of Proficiency in English

Candidates admitted through the selection process for graduate courses in Astronomy – MSc, PhD and PhD with direct entry – must present a certificate of proficiency in English at the enrollment. To view the full list of certificates accepted by the Program, please click here.

General rules for registration in the selection process

(1) Candidates to the Master, Doctorate and Doctorate with Direct Entry Selection Process must register for the Unified Examination in Physics (EUF). For further information, visit the EUF website.

Please pay attention to the information and dates for each examination. Usually the EUF online application occurs a few months prior to the Astronomy Program registration.

The exam’s results have a validity period of three years.

The results will be disclosed in a list with the numerical code for each candidate who took the exam at the date specified in the applications calendar.

The Proficiency Exam in Mathematics and Physics (PMF – Proficiência em Matemática e Física) will no longer be carried out beyond 2017. Candidates already owning a PMF certificate (validity period of 3 years) may skip to item (2).

Registration in the Unified Examination does not imply automatic registration in the Astronomy Graduate Program selection process.

(2) Candidates approved in the  EUF must send the required documents to register in the selection process, according to the call for applications.

(3) Selection Process for Master’s and Doctorate with Direct Entry occurs twice a year. The Selection Process for the Doctorate (with Master’s) is continuous.

(4) Students approved in Selection Process will be ranked according to their final grades for means of scholarship distribution.

Attention:

1 - Documents required for registration may be delivered directly at IAG/USP Graduate Student Administration, by e-mail or SEDEX. In the event of e-mail delivery, the candidate must fill, sign and scan the required forms before dispatch. For those who decide to use SEDEX, only documents sent before the registration deadline will be accepted (date postmark will be checked). Any required certificates must be attached to the Standard Curriculum.

2 - Deadlines for sending documents are in the “Program Calendar”. Please observe that the contacting procedures should begin at least six months prior to the deadline, so that last minutes difficulties be avoided (even more so for international applicants, due to bureaucratic issues).

3 - The Admissions Committee is ready to administer the exam nearly anywhere inside the country or even abroad. Applicants are not required to be present at the Institute to take the exam. Therefore, contacting our Graduate Student Administration through the e-mail (cpiag@usp.br) and being attentive of the instructions that will be sent are of great importance.

4 - A research project proposal is mandatory and must be submitted along the required documents for enrollment. At this stage, the Astronomy Graduate Program Coordinating Committee will assess the feasibility of the project presented and may suggest modifications. Therefore, it is fundamental that you explore the sections “Lines of Research” and “Supervisors” when choosing a course.

5 - The rank obtained in the Selection Process can be used as means for admission in other Astronomy Graduate Programs throughout Brazil. For such, the applicant must contact the Graduate Program Coordination of interest and verify the validity of our classification at the intended institution.
