Proficiency in English and Portuguese

PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Students should demonstrate proficiency in English for both the Master's and PhD programs. Accepted exams are described in the selection process (here).

The English exam for masters, applied by the CCP, consists of reading texts followed by multiple choice tests. The English exam for doctorate and direct doctorate, applied by the CCP, consists of reading texts followed by multiple choice tests and to write a small English language essay about one selected topic of Geophysics. Dictionary usage is allowed.

PROFICIENCY IN PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE (for foreigners)

Foreign students, in addition to proficiency in English, are also required to be proficient in Portuguese. Those from Portuguese-speaking countries or individuals who hold undergraduate or postgraduate degrees obtained in Portuguese-speaking countries are considered proficient in Portuguese.

In any other case, proficiency in Portuguese must be demonstrated in one of the following ways:

1. Presentation of Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners (CELPE-Bras), at the intermediate level, provided by the Secretariat of Higher Education, Ministry of Education of Brazil.

2. Examination of proficiency in Portuguese, applied by the Interdepartmental Center of Languages of FFLCH USP, with the minimum grade required equal to 07 (seven).

3. The examination applied by the CCP, which will be written in Portuguese, with the minimum grade required equal to 07 (seven).

To the foreign student that demonstrates the Portuguese language proficiency in the Master, the examination in the Doctorate will not be required.

Foreign studentes must demonstrate proficiency in Portuguese Language up to 365 days after the beginning of the study program.
