Language Proficiency

 

Current Regulations (valid from 24/01/2014 and also valid for students who opted for the new Program regulations, issued by Resolution CoPGr-6.674):

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

MSc or PhD students must demonstrate an adequate level of English proficiency, and shall be assessed by a committee composed of two accredited supervisors from the program appointed by the CCP.

MSc students will be required to translate a text from English to Portuguese, with the aid of a dictionary.

PhD students will be required to write a summary in English from a text written in Portuguese, also with the aid of a dictionary.

Proficiency exams, such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, Michigan, taken within the last 5 (five) years before enrollment in the Graduate Program, will be accepted from both master’s and doctoral students. The minimum passing grade for the exams will be disclosed in a specific guide in the Program’s webpage and Diário Oficial do Estado de São Paulo. Other exams and their respective minimum grades may be analyzed by the CCP upon request from  the applicant.

Students must attest proficiency in the required languages within a period of 16, 28 and 34 months after enrolling for the MSc, PhD and PhD with direct entry courses, respectively.

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (international students)

Besides English proficiency, international students are also required to demonstrate proficiency in Portuguese, attested upon presenting the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, CELPE-BRAS, intermediate level or higher. The exam will not be required from PhD students who already confirmed Portuguese proficiency during Master’s degree.
 

Students must demonstrate proficiency in the required languages within a period of 16, 28 and 34 months after enrolling for the MSc, PhD and PhD with direct entry courses, respectively.

Other exams may be accepted to attest English proficiency, such as: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge and Michigan. The exam must have been taken in the last 5 (five) years before the registration deadline for the proficiency exam administered by the Graduate Program.

Minimum passing grades for each exam will be disclosed in a specific guide on the Program’s webpage. Students must demonstrate English proficiency before 50% of the program’s maximum duration has transpired.

PROFICIENCY IN PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE (international students)

Besides English proficiency, international students are also required to demonstrate Portuguese proficiency, attested upon presenting the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, CELPE-BRAS, intermediate or high level, before 50% of the program’s maximum duration has transpired.
For PhD students, the exam will not be required from those who already confirmed Portuguese proficiency during Master’s degree.
