Supermassive Black Holes: From the First Billion Years to the Present Era
a talk by Drª. Thaisa Storchi Bergmann (Instituto de Física - UFRGS) - In-Person
Abstract:
Supermassive Black Holes (SMBH) inhabit the nuclei of most – if not all, massive galaxies (>10 9 M Sun ). Models of galaxy evolution attribute a fundamental role to their feedback in quenching star formation when they are in the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) phase. I will present studies from our group showing that the kinetic feedback from AGN ionized gas outflows in the near Universe falls short of that required in the models. But that a recent JWST observations of our Cycle 1 project shows strong feedback in the warm molecular gas, that indicates that the feedback must be looked for in this gas phase as well. I will also discuss another recent result from our group: an increased Star Formation Rate (SFR) in AGN host galaxies relative to a control sample of non-active galaxies, which is at odds with the idea that AGN quench star formation. Finally, I will discuss the implications of recent JWST results, from the first billion years of the Universe that show: more AGN than expected, with SMBH masses up to ~100 times higher relative to that of their host galaxies than in the near Universe; spectra of the most distant and red AGN show a high incidence of very young starbursts, similarly to what we have been finding in the present-day Universe.
