Towards AGN population studies at the TeV energy scale

Edivaldo Moura Santos

IFUSP, BR

The full sky coverage at gamma-ray energies provided by the Fermi satellite has open up a unique observational window for performing AGN population studies at the GeV energy range. The same coverage will soon be provided by the Cherenkov Telescope Array at the TeV scale through its planned extragalactic sky survey. In this talk, we first review the current knowledge on the gamma-ray blazar population properties. And then discuss the prospects for future studies at very-high energies with both southern and northern CTA observatories. Special attention will be paid to the so called blazar luminosity function as well as the role played by gamma-ray attenuation for cosmologically distributed TeV- emitters.

Edivaldo Moura Santos has a PhD in physics (USP), during which he studied rare decays of K-mesons with data from the fixed-target program at Fermilab. He then moved to the field of Astroparticle physics, holding posdoctoral (CBPF and LPNHE-Paris) and adjunct professor positions (UFRJ), dedicating his time mainly to the measurements of anisotropies in the flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. He is currently an associate professor at IFUSP with interests in extragalactic gamma-ray astronomy, observational cosmology and, more recently, the direct searches for dark matter with liquified noble gases.
